Everyday Stephen Magsig creates an oil painting of urban Detroit, and soon he will have completed his 800th painting. Mr. Magsig lives in Ferndale with his wife, fellow artist Janet Hamrick. He’s been a successful painter for over 30 years and is represented by galleries in Birmingham, Michigan, and New York. Most of his attention is spent on his Postcards from Detroit project, in which he paints daily a 5×7-inch painting and sells it on Ebay with prices between $100- $200.

  • I appreciate that he follows his passion and gets rewarded, while being able to share. Nice presentation and GO 800!

  • Wow– to do what you love and find a way to make it pay the bills, too. That is impressive. I also appreciate how down-to-earth he is. I wish I has his tenacity to stick with his project the way he does.
